The cursed student
The following article is a case study into vicissitudes of Jan Rudko, a secondary school student from Komarówka Podlaska, at the time of the Stalinist period. Anti-communist annotations that had been left on a book borrowed from a school library, made Jan Rudko a „public enemy” who was expelled from school and attracted the attention of the communist political police. This example of a secondary school student, which is just a single episode of the peak of communist persecution in Poland, portrays the predicament of Polish schoolchildren pursued for political reasons by the totalitarian communist state.
