Influence of the weather on the course of the Battle of Chocim (1621)

“Edeljude” and the miraculous salvation — the case of a close relationship between Adolf Hitler and the Jewish doctor Eduard Bloch (1872–1945)

What kind of relationships had Dr. Eduard Bloch, with the creator of the ephemeral ‘Aryan’ empire? How did this humble provincial doctor get Hitler’s recognition and even gratitude? Should we sought the sources of antisemitism of the German leader in the tragic circumstances of this relationship? Dr. Eduard Bloch treated Hitler’s mother, caring her to the very end. The future Führer never forgot the sacrifice of the Jewish doctor, and after coming to power surrounded him and his whole family with care and protection. This refutes the old risky thesis about Bloch as a subconscious catalyst of Hitler’s antisemitism. The roots of Hitler’s antisemitism should rather be sought in the atmosphere of the era — ‘scientific’ literature, journalism — from studies with scientific ambitions to leaflets. Finally, biographical threads and personal resentment cannot be ruled out here. There is no simple and straightforward answer.

Jakie relacje łączyły doktora Eduarda Blocha z twórcą efemerycznego „aryjskiego” imperium? W jaki sposób ten skromny prowincjonalny lekarz zdobył uznanie, a nawet wdzięczność Hitlera? Czy źródeł antysemityzmu „wodza” Niemiec należy szukać w tragicznych okolicznościach związanych z tą znajomością? Doktor Eduard Bloch leczył matkę Hitlera, z oddaniem opiekując się chorą aż do ostatnich chwil jej życia. Przyszły Führer nigdy nie zapomni poświęcenia żydowskiego lekarza, i po dojściu do władzy otoczy Blocha oraz całą jego rodzinę opieką. Pozwala to odrzucić dawną ryzykowną tezę o doktorze Blochu jako podświadomym katalizatorze antysemityzmu Hitlera. Korzeni uprzedzeń etnicznych dyktatora należy szukać raczej w klimacie epoki – literaturze „naukowej”, publicystyce – od poważnych opracowań o ambicjach naukowych po pisma ulotne. Wreszcie, nie można wykluczyć tu wątków biograficznych, osobistych urazów. Nie ma tutaj prostej i jednoznacznej odpowiedzi.

W okresie PRL Kościół pozostawał jedyną niezależną przestrzenią życia publicznego. Wypełniał swoją podstawową misję, sprowadzającą się do przekazywania depozytu wiary, a równocześnie stał się siłą wspierającą i skupiającą dążenia wolnościowe Polaków. Z pełną otwartością, przed tym zadaniem, stanął w dekadzie lat 80. ubiegłego wieku. Znakiem czasu stawały się wówczas nowe formy duszpasterstwa. Jednym z nich było się duszpasterstwo rolników, skierowane ku wszystkim mieszkańcom wsi, ale najpełniej podjęte przez osoby związane z Solidarnością. Dzięki temu wsparciu Kościoła na wsi utrzymane zostały obszary niezależne, w tym Solidarność Rolników Indywidualnych. To historyczne wyzwanie w znakomitym zakresie zostało podjęte na terenie diecezji lubelskiej.

Pastoral care of farmers in the Lublin diocese in the 1980s

In the times of the Polish People’s Republic, the Church was the only independent area of public life. It was carrying out its basic mission, the aim of which was to hand over the deposit of faith and at the same time it became the power supporting and focusing the freedom aspirations of the Polish people. With full openness, the Church faced this task in the 80s of the last century. The new forms of pastoral ministry were becoming the sign of the times then. One of them was the pastoral care for individual farmers directed to all the inhabitants of villages but it was undertaken most fully by the people connected with Solidarity. Thanks to the support of the Church, the independent areas were maintained in the villages, including the Solidarity of Individual Farmers. This historic challenge, to a large extent, was taken  within the Lublin Diocese.

Development problems of the bialskopodlaskie voivodeship in the initial period of its operation (1975-1979)

The reforms of the administrative division of the country carried out over the last several decades (1972-1998) introduced many significant changes in the areas of the functioning of the bureaucratic apparatus. Initially, the three-tier administrative division was replaced with a two-tier one and an increased number of voivodeships was introduced, as many as 49. One of the newly created ones was the Biała Podlaskie Voivodeship, which from the very beginning struggled with many adaptation problems. This article aims to show the problems of the development of the bialskopodlaskie voivodeship in the early years of its existence. The discussed issue is only an introduction to a broader description, as it has not been subjected to extensive research yet.

Przeprowadzane reformy podziału administracyjnego kraju na przestrzeni ostatnich kilkudziesięciu lat (1972-1998) wprowadziły wiele znaczonych zmian na płaszczyznach funkcjonowania aparatu biurokratycznego. Początkowo trójstopniowy podział administracyjny, zastąpiono dwustopniowym i wprowadzono powiększoną liczbę województw, bo aż 49. Jednym z nowopowstałych było województwo bialskopodlaskie, które od początku zmagało się z wieloma problemami adaptacyjnymi. Niniejszy artykuł ma na celu ukazanie problemów rozwoju województwa bialskopodlaskiego w początkowych latach jego istnienia. Omawiane zagadnienie stanowi jedynie wstęp do szerszego opisu ponieważ nie został on jeszcze poddany szerszym badaniom.
